A symbol of someone swimming.Newly opened in fall 2014, Northview’s state-of-the-art swimming facility is committed to improving the health, safety, enjoyment and athletic competition of the Northview community.  The pool supports all competitive water sports with 13 lanes and two levels for diving (2 -1 meter boards and 1 – 3 meter board).  The pool has a 20 x 40-foot shallow area that can be used for activities such as swim lessons, water therapy and water aerobics.

What’s up at the pool?           


Boys Varsity and Northview Community Swim Teams will be in full swing with NCST practices in the evenings from 6-8:30 p.m., Mon-Thurs.  Therefore, evening Lap Swim is now on Monday & Wednesday only, 8-9:15 p.m. until mid-February.  Morning Lap Swim is still MWF 5:30-7:30 a.m. and Saturday 8-11 a.m. unless noted.

NV hosts 3 NCST Saturday meets that disrupt regular Aquatic Center programming on January 6, 20, and 27.  On those days, we will still hold Open Swim from 12-3 p.m. although it may start a little late.  Lap swimmers will not be charged to swim on these days.

NV hosts a swim clinic on Sunday, January 21 so no Open Swim that day.

On February 3 NV hosts the West Michigan Swim League Conference Championship B Meet, which runs into the early afternoon.  We hold Open Swim on that day from 2-4 p.m.

On February 24 NV hosts the Boys High School Conference meet.  There will be no Lap or Open Swim that day.

Lap Swim

Monday ,Wednesday, Friday:  5:30 – 7:30 a.m

Monday, Wednesday: 8 – 9:15 p.m.

Saturday: 8 – 11 a.m.

A Northview Fitness Center membership covers your cost to participate in lap swim.  Non-members must purchase a day pass for $5, paid at the Fitness Center desk.  All lap swimmers must check in at the Fitness Club desk before entering the pool area.

Open Swim

Saturday & Sunday:  Noon – 3 p.m.

($3 fee per person per visit.  Check-in with staff on pool deck.  Fitness Center membership does not cover Open Swim.)

During open swim children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Children in diapers must wear a swim diaper. Children that cannot swim on their own must be accompanied by an adult in the water. A life jacket may be used as long as the parent/guardian is on deck nearby as their child is swimming.

Swim Lessons

PRESCHOOL SWIM CLASSES (during the day) begin January 22.

To register:  Go to MindBody.  Search for Northview Fitness Center.  Set up your account.  Go to Enrollments.  Find the program and “Enroll as Unpaid.”  Print the confirmationswim lessons page and mail with a check to Northview Aquatic Center, 4451 Hunsberger NE Grand Rapids, MI  49525.


Developmental Swim lessons for preschool (3-5 years) and youth (6-12 years), as well as pre-competitive lessons will be held beginning Wednesday February 28.   Classes will meet Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings through March 24 (March 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, and 24).  Preschool classes and pre-competitive classes meet 6-6:45 p.m. on Wednesday and 8-8:45 a.m. on Saturday.  Youth classes meet 7-7:45 p.m. on Wednesdays and 9-9:45 a.m. on Saturdays.  Cost is $75 for Northview students, staff, and residents, $85 for non-residents.  Register on MindBody; call or contact Suann with questions (616-361-3466 or

Life Guards

lifeguard logoWant to become a lifeguard?

It’s a technically challenging job requiring responsibility and professionalism, but offers flexible part time scheduling or seasonal work.  An American Red Cross lifeguard training class is being offered at the Northview Aquatic Center in March, just in time to apply for that summer job!

Pre-requisite skills include:

  • Must be 15 years old by the last day of class
  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control & rhythmic breathing. May use front crawl or breastroke, or a combination, but no swimming on the back or side
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards (no goggles allowed)
    • Surface dive, feet-first or headfirst, to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath
    • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps

Dates and times are as follows:

  • March 10, 17, and 24 (Saturdays) 8a-4p with an hour off for lunch
  • March 6, 13, 20 and 27 (Tuesdays) from 3-7p (last day is test day)
